Our Story

A Vision Takes Root

In 1969, a small group of believers, led by Pastor Billy Martin and supported by Urban Street Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, founded Calvary Baptist Church. With six families, totaling 25 charter members, they turned a vacant truck stop between King and Rural Hall into a sanctuary, driven by a calling to spread the gospel and build a faithful community.

Early Steps of Faith

Led by Pastor Maurice Wheat, a Piedmont Bible College graduate, the church grew through dedicated outreach. Members canvassed neighborhoods along Highways 52 and 66, inviting families to worship. The first baptisms took place in a local creek, marking new beginnings. The church started children’s ministries, a bus ministry, and supported missionaries, planting seeds for a global mission.

Growing in Purpose

By 1978, the congregation outgrew its original space and built a new sanctuary on Spainhour Road. This milestone fueled growth, with souls saved and families joining the church. In 1982, Calvary Christian School opened, providing Christ-centered education. In 1988, Calvary Baptist Bible College was established, training over 130 graduates who now serve as pastors, missionaries, and church planters in 16 states and four countries.

Bold Steps Forward

In 2020, amidst a global pandemic, the church transformed a former Engles grocery store on Main Street in King into a vibrant worship and ministry center. In 2022, a 37,000-square-foot Family Life Center was completed, housing Calvary Christian School and expanding the church’s outreach to serve the community more deeply.

A Lasting Legacy

Today, with nearly 1,000 members, Calvary Baptist Church supports over 100 missionaries and organizations to spread the gospel worldwide and has given millions of dollars to reach countless souls. From humble beginnings, we remain dedicated to honoring God, building lives, and spreading the gospel. Join us as we continue this journey, trusting God to lead us forward.
